I don’t know how many people are aware of a website called Unleash the Fanboy, but I am and I’ve seen some of his reviews on MLP. I think there’re multiple people there working on the site but there’s one guy who does review comics, episodes and movies for MLP. Some of his reviews I think are spot on like with Amending Fences, The Gift of the Maud Pie, Slice of Life and a few others. But lately he has shown to be more closed minded and not really look at the whole big picture for MLP. I have several examples.
Wait! Wait! Waaaaiiiitt. Disclaimers, this is my opinion of this guy’s reviews, I don’t intend to cause any offense between you, him or anyone. If you like the website then fine, just don’t pest me about the website since I don’t think it’s a good reviewing website for MLP. And things of MLP I mention are my opinions as well. Additionally if someone tries to be a bully and being hateful to my opinion, your comments will be deleted and you will be blocked. Okay?
Let’s start with something simple, like the Pinkie Pie and Celestia Friends Forever review. This comic is an okay/mediocre comic and the art is not the best, yet, he gave it a 10/10 without going into much detail as to why he gave it a 10/10. But wait, I’m getting to the bigger parts. One of the biggest, if not the biggest is how he gave No Second Prances a 6/10 when he gave the worst two parter in the comics a 10/10 and a 9/10. He called Twilight’s performance in No Second Prances terrible when Twilight was nervous Starlight would be badly influenced by Trixie because of their pasts. It was as if she wasn’t allowed to make that mistake and learn from the experience.
In The Good the Bad and the Ponies where bulls sieged the town, property being destroyed, her friends being hurt, wouldn’t help ponies in need, not using magic against the bulls since they’re ‘’legal citizens of Equestria’’ and implies creatures like Hydras couldn’t be hurt, when she could use magic to freeze the bulls in place, but she did on a historic landmark and put them in a makeshift jail using her magic. Something she could’ve done from the start! It destroys Twilight’s character and more and this guy gave the two issues a 10/10 and a 9/10 while calling her performance in No Second Prances ‘’terrible’’. Which do you think is the terrible performance?
More examples is him calling out how freak out scenes are ‘’overdone’’ but that’s a part of Twilight’s character, like Lesson Zero and in Party Pooped. When Twilight and Cadance didn’t have much of a role in Princess Spikeand made Spike fix his mistakes, he said their roles are solid when they really weren’t. Again in The Cutie Maphe praised her role, but she and her friends had about the same amount of appreciation with other ponies. And he says Rainbow Dash is comically oblivious to such things like in Read it and Weep and Tanks for the Memories, where it’s a part of her character to not have the brightest ideas from time to time.
Next, he says in some episodes like Lesson Zero and Make New Friends But Keep Discord there’s a whole bunch of random stuff happening for no reason like in SpongeBob these days. But this is kinda ridiculous, in MLP in episodes like those they always learn a lesson at the end and their characters do grow while in some episodes of SpongeBob a bunch of random stuff does happen but it resets to the status quo with no character growth. Using SpongeBob to compare with MLP like that isn’t the best idea.
Now, about Discord, we’ve seen him go from villain, to reluctant ally, betrayal and final redemption and him finally getting along with the main characters in What About Discord. But when it seemed like he was up to something and he wasn’t, the guy who reviewed it called the entire story a red herring while forgetting about Discord’s path until this moment. He does note when they act a bit rude to him like they always do (at least he remembered that much) and then they all hug at the end, he didn’t know what the writer was trying to do. It’s like he wanted his princess Twilight to be right and Discord be punished like in Three’s a Crowd.
He gave Rainbow Falls, one of the lower RD episodes a 4/5, when I see it as one of the lower episodes. Tanks For the Memories he didn’t cover the big picture of the whole thing being about the 5 stages of grief.
He said Twilight was ‘’off’’ in The Hooffields and McColts, but she was just excited of finally getting to get to go on a mission. What if he was held back until he was called on a mission like that? Wouldn’t he be eager to finally do something? He gave Brotherhooves Social a 5/10 when it was a great episode, hilarious and heartfelt.
In Ponyville Days, another two part comic, he criticized the 2nd part for taking out the fun of the pies, dresses and ponies fighting each other. But it wasn’t fun, it was them acting like little children, some of the Mane 6 have absolute petty reasons to join the sides against each other (except Fluttershy and Twilight, who went away on business), especially Rainbow Dash when she joins Rarity’s side against Applejack when she enjoys the cider and saying her rivalry between the two is nonsense because it’s a competitive rivalry, not something that’d lead them to this and it’s like their friendship over the years never mattered at all. Basically part 1 brought down their characters and made the fillies look more mature when part 2 was a LOT better and I can read that with a different mindset. If he said part 2 took the fun out of it, then what does he truly think about the characters and their dignities?
Almost done, he even skipped over On Your Marks and Gauntlet of Fire. He didn’t review them as of when this blog was poster. Close minded, not looking at the big picture, and so forth, this is a lot of the reasons why I don’t think he’s a good reviewer even if some of them are spot on or almost in my eyes.
Thanks for reading and I just needed to vent.
